From the most creative (cupcakes topped with \u00e2\u20ac\u0153skeletons\u00e2\u20ac\u009d made of yogurt pretzels and marshmallows) to the least (a full-sized fake plastic skeleton whose ribcage was merely loaded with sausages and other meaty snack \u00e2\u20ac\u0153innards\u00e2\u20ac\u009d), it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fun to see what new ghoulish goody interpretations people come up with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image-4-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1412\" \/><\/a>I generally shy away from the uber grisly looking snack concepts (like Jack o\u00e2\u20ac\u2122lantern serving bowls \u00e2\u20ac\u0153barfing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d guacamole), although I love things like ice \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hands\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153faces,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d made with plastic gloves and masks,  floating spookily in a punch bowl. And ever since the year I made owl cupcakes that used deconstructed Oreos as their eyes and horns (the process of which nearly drove me mad), I have resisted anything too labor-intensive that had little payoff.<\/p>\n<p>Still, from time to time on Halloween, I like to toss my witch hat in the ring and attempt a spooky snack if an appealing recipe beckons. And a year ago, one did\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6in the form of a bloody severed finger!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_1-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_1-4-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1413\" \/><\/a>I had seen online and on TV a couple of recipes for a sugar cookie dough molded into a craggy finger shape, complete with almond sliver nail, then once baked, dipped into some red (raspberry or strawberry) jam to resemble the bloody end of a chopped finger. Not only was the visual effective, the cookies also sounded delicious!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_4-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_4-3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1414\" \/><\/a>The recipe I chose was featured on a kids\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Halloween episode of Food Network\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Giada De Laurentiis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Giada at Home.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The simple sugar cookie dough looked easily moldable (and I cannot resist a good sugar cookie dough for nibbling or finger-making). I decided to add a little almond extract in addition to the vanilla since the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153nail\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for each finger was to be an almond slice.<\/p>\n<p>[M]y first go at baking these cookies was a year ago, for a Halloween\/birthday\/bonfire celebration in Kansas. It was a treat for me to make each finger, down to the wrinkle lines on the knobby joints of each bony digit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2-261x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"230\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2-261x300.jpg 261w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2-131x150.jpg 131w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2-400x459.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_2-2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The cookies did puff up when baking (which kind of made them look creepier, in a bloated sort of way), but when I revisited the recipe this year, I tried chilling the dough, as well as making each finger a little thinner, to see if I could keep the fingers more bony and less fat.<\/p>\n<p>I do think that my 2017 version of these beauties, both by chilling the dough and molding the cookies in a skinnier rendition, kept them from blowing up and spreading into stubby, fat fingers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_6-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_6-4-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1416\" \/><\/a>Fat or skinny, the cookies are yummy, particularly with that little hit of sweet jam on the bottom. They are buttery, tender and flavorful and hold up well for several days, if kept refrigerated. My mom thought they were so delicious that they should be made year round, and suggested that they could be a sandwich or thumbprint cookie at less-ghoulish times of the year.<\/p>\n<p>But while some might consider them to be in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153poor taste,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I kind of prefer them in finger form. And I will always remember them as perhaps the first in a potentially burgeoning repertoire of what a friend called my \u00e2\u20ac\u0153creepy but tasty pastries\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I served at that Kansas party that also included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/?p=1191\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chocolate mice<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>BONE appetit!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5-400x559.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.womansconed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/image_3-5.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Witch Finger Cookies<br \/>\nFrom \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Giada at Home\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (www.foodnetwork.com)<br \/>\nMakes 28 to 32 cookies<\/p>\n<p>Vegetable oil cooking spray<br \/>\n2 cups all-purpose flour\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon baking powder\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon fine salt\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1\/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1 cup sugar\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1 large egg, at room temperature\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n28 large sliced almonds\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n1\/2 cup raspberry jam\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Place an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray a rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray or line with a silicone baking mat. Set aside.<br \/>\nIn a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until smooth. Gradually beat in the flour mixture until a dough forms.<\/p>\n<p>Using about1 1\/2 tablespoons of dough at a time, roll the dough between your palms into 5-inch-long fingers about 1\/2-inch thick. Firmly press a sliced almond into the end of each finger to make fingernails. Make several horizontal cuts, about 1\/4 inch deep and 1\/2 inch long, in the center of each finger to make knuckles. Press the dough on either side of the cuts to shape the knuckles. Arrange the fingers on the prepared baking sheet and bake until light golden, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer the fingers to a wire rack and cool completely.<\/p>\n<p>In a small saucepan, heat the jam over low heat until warm, about 2 minutes. I used less dough per cookie \u00e2\u20ac\u201d about 1 tablespoon.
